$29,000 is VERY VERY VERY cheap for a house and a 1/2 acre. I would make sure to get it inspected.

In any case, if you have bad credit and want to finance through a bank, you are not very likely to get it. They are very picky right now. The answer is to clean up your credit!!! Pay off your debts, make your payments on time, etc. There is no magical formula – just pay your bills.

I highly recommend going to a first time home buyer’s class in your area. Learn how to pay your bills on time, work out any credit issues, and then understand the best way to approach buying a home. This way you can keep it as well, and avoid common pitfalls of home buying.

With today’s market it is very hard to get pre-approved if your credit is not in a good shape.

Your best bet is to talk to a lender (most likely locally). He/she will let look at your credit, income, and asset and will tell you how much you can afford. He/she will also tell you what you need to do to improve your credit.
