Can my girlfriend and I finance a car with both bad credit?
We want to get a car but we both have low credit scores. She wants to cosign for me. Does anyone know if that will be a huge problem financing a car?

If you both have great income, sure.
Remember, the idea of a cosigner is to bring UP your credentials in the eyes of a lender.
Otherwise, the cash car lot is that way, sir…

- here’s a good website to look for real cheap quality car from government auctions!
I bought my car for just $1250 with a milage of 5,270!
And it’s been already a year I’m riding my car and it’s still doing well!
If you both have bad credit, no.
A cosigner who also has bad credit does not help any !
You have low credit scores because you are unreliable and have proven you dont do what you say you will do.
So financing a car is difficult.
However, with a LOT down someone will.
Or you can pay WAY too much at a buy here pay here lot.
Why do you think responsbile people pay their bills ?
My wife and I both had bad credit when we got our car. I mean, credit scores in the 300s… that’s bad. We were able to receive financing through a “second chance” lendor. The key is: time on the job, two incomes is a big help, time in residence, and age of negative credit. In addition, the amount of your “cash play” or down payment is a make-it or break-it in this kind of deal.
What the lendor is looking for is: stability (so they know you and the car are going to stick around), reliable income (so they know the payments will be made), and some “play” or contribution on your end (i.e. a decent down payment).
We started out with a stepping stone vehicle, a 2003 Ford Explorer from a second rate car lot with 136,000 miles on it. In only six months, with always on time payments, we stepped up to a 2006 Ford Taurus with 26,000 miles on it. This did two things: it improved out vehicle and it bumped our credit scores up to the 600 range due to a vehicle pay off. The new lot payed off the old loan and formed a new loan for the new car. Now, again about six months later, I am trading in my Taurus on a new car from a mainline Ford dealership.
One of the big factors for my loan was most of my bad credit was over 4 years old. She had current bad credit, but we came up with $1000 cash down and both have decent jobs.
So, yes… it can be done. There are several factors to consider. I hope this helps some.
If you both have low credit scores there may be no point in having a cosigner. The idea behing a cosigner is to find someone with good credit who can serve as a guarantor in the event you default on the loan.
That being said, you may be able to find alternative financing yourself without having to add your girlfriend on the loan. For instance, you can try rent to own car programs or buy here pay here car dealers. Some mainstream dealers also offer what are known as second chance financing programs. Check into those, but be aware that they will typically require a higher than usual downpayment.
Also, you should know that you will pay more interest than the average consumer with a good credit score. That is the price you pay for having bad credit.
There are some sites online that can help connect you with a variety of special financing programs. Try these first, since they will save you time and effort.
Good luck!
